Varmint Calling
Calling plays a major part when practicing varmint hunting because if done properly, it can greatly improve the overall chances of an efficient varmint hunting experience. Due to the fact that varmint is a general term of animals that are considered nuisance, there isn’t a general calling method that is suitable for all types of varmints. Besides the method, the calls are also quite different from animal to animal, so a rabbit call won’t be very useful if you plan on hunting a fox or other animals that is why we strongly advise hunters to have a look on the Internet before purchasing a product like this. In some areas, rabbits are considered nuisance thus varmints, that is why, in the following two paragraphs we will introduce you in the world of rabbit calling.
The most optimal way to attract rabbits is to get to know which are their favorite treats. In order to do so, you should use chunks of melons or pieces of tomato. The method is quite simple as a matter of fact. Start by placing the lures around the area where you know that rabbits are living. Afterwards use your rabbit call for approximately 5 minutes and then make a small pause. If nothing happens after you have made the pause, repeat this procedure 2-3 times.
You will then notice that the rabbits will get curious once they will hear your call and they will start to analyze the area and most likely, they will find the lure, giving you the perfect opportunity for an efficient shot. You should be aware of the fact that these animals are quite fast so you will have a few moments when you can make the shot … that is why we strongly advise you to think a lot before placing the lure and positioning yourself.
Moving on, if you plan on hunting coyotes, you should know that calling them plays a major part in the entire hunting process. Learning how to properly use a mouth blown rabbit-in-distress call is a fairly simple task. Almost any of the calls on today’s market are liable to work just fine for you. Remember to stay about 30 minutes on each stand, particularly when calling in an open area. If you are in an area that is greatly wooded, you may only stay 10-15 minutes on stand because the sound of the call won’t travel very far. You will want to make calls for short intervals of time, for instance call for 20-30 seconds, then wait 2 minutes, and then repeat.
When it comes down to coyote hunting, half of the battle is won if you know where to position yourself so that the animals won’t detect you but in the same time, you can have the chance for a deadly shot. Camouflaging is crucial if you plan on calling these animals that is why we advise all coyote hunters to purchase clothing that blends with the environment in which they will hunt. Speaking of positioning, experienced hunters recommend that when hunting coyotes, hunters should place themselves in the shade so that it will help them hide their position and decrease the chances of being spotted by the animals.
Another varmint is considered to be the raccoon. The process of calling raccoons is quite similar to the technique of calling fox so we will catch 2 rabbits in the same time reviewing how to call coons. A very wise rule of thumb to remember for the entire length of time it takes to call raccoons (or foxes) is about 10 minutes. A very recommended tool for coon calling would be the Dennis Kirk puppies tape as many experienced hunters affirm that this is the best way to call coons. If you are planning to use a call for coons, we recommend that you hang it from a tree branch that is aimed in the direction you believe the raccoons will come from.
Coon calling should be done when you hunt with a friend, back to back, as these little animals can surprise you from anywhere so you would better be prepared for a situation like this. When calling, you should try different tonalities and try using the wind to your advantage. The recommended calls for this procedure would be rodent squeaks, bird distress, a predator call with “small“ sounds or anything similar with the above mentioned.
All things considered, calling varmints isn’t as difficult as many of you might have thought but it takes time and preparation in order to do it flawlessly. We advise you to have patience and be very attentive when using calling procedures on varmints as these animals can be very tricky.
