Varmint Hunting Dogs

The term varmint is a concept that puts together all the creatures that, with their excessive breeding habits and favorable conditions all-around, have gotten so abundant that they are practically a nuisance. Also, animals considered to be carrying diseases that can be transmitted to man are considered part of the “varmint family”. The term varmint will vary from location to location as the nuisances vary.

Some of these varmints can be hunted using a hunting dog. We will now offer you a small yet useful list of what dogs are recommended to hunt these annoying animals that make our life harder and uncomfortable. You should be aware of the fact that there isn’t a dog that is fully capable of hunting all of the varmints, some are good at some varmints while others are recommended for other varmints.

We will describe some of the most suitable dogs for a varmint hunting adventure.

American Staghound

The American Staghound shares its features with the Scottish Deerhound and the Greyhound but he isn’t recognized as a distinctive breed, he is a type of sighthound that hunters use for many types of game. A running dog that has the physical characteristics of the greyhound: long legs, strong muscles and a deep chest. The dog has very good visual acuity and some of these dogs were primarily bred for their scenting abilities.

The American Staghound is very affectionate with its owner and is very calm around the house, making him a good dog with children. These dogs can be very good watchdogs thanks to their very good vision but they are not protective or guardians. Although they are remarkably fast, they aren’t very active, on the contrary, many people consider it to be a rather lazy dog. The dog is pack-oriented so he may accept other dogs but not cats.
